Montefiorino consists of a 10th century castle with the town surrounding it. The castle is open to the public and within the walls there is a museum dedicated to the Italian Resistance in World War II. Riolunato is a quaint town near Fiumalbo. With fresco’s on housing walls dating back to the 14th century, this town is a step back into time. It is situated near Mt Cimone with plenty of opportunities to paint the quiet streets. Fiumalbo is a medieval town situated between two rivers. Original stone houses and towers with small narrow streets reveal a town steeped with history. The landscape consists of a beautiful old church, stone bridges and a Seminary Abbey. | Sasso Rosso is an isolated village with red stone buildings. These buildings are perched against a rocky outcrop where the people would mine red stone to construct the local castles. There is no road for cars but small tracks with steps allows you to walk from one building to another. |

| Lucca is a beautiful walled city. Duomo di San Martino is Lucca’s finest Romanesque building. The impressive façade is due to the sculpture and carving work from the 14th century. The medieval streets can be explored by foot. Immerse yourself in the history, culture and shopping. | Buccasuollo is a cluster of villages (“borga”) situated on a rocky hill. From the Bell Tower, there are spectacular views of the village and of the Dragon Valley (“Valle di Dragone”). There are also mountain tracks filled with chestnuts trees, elms and mushrooms. | Vitriolla has towers which were built by Contessa Matilda di Canossa during the dark ages for the defense of the area. There are pathways that lead to interesting pockets of stone buildings surrounded by colourful gardens and farm animals. |

| Castiglione Garfagnana dates before the dark ages (700AD) and is a town surrounded within a castle wall. It has narrow cobble streets with very old churches and amazing views from the castle walls. | Castellarano is a beautifully preserved medieval hamlet, is one of the best-known preserved medievel towns in the province. Two cobblestone streets run through the ancient section leading to the Castello and Torre dell’Orologio (an ancient lookout tower which guards the Secchia River). | Palagano has beautiful 15th century churches and bell towers, villas, shops, cafes and restaurants which are all in easy walking distance. You will be surrounded by breath-taking landscapes and for the more adventurous, there are many walks off the beaten track to capture your imagination. Palagano will provide the artist with many opportunity to find interesting subjects to paint. |
